DESCRIPTION:Programma van De Balie in Amsterdam\, met bijdragen van Frank Bloem en Thijs Middeldorp over de Ambassade van de Noordzee en het Parlement van de Dingen. Taal: NL/ ENG \nUitnodiging van De Balie: \nWe weten dat we onze aarde aan het verwoesten zijn\, maar lijken niet in staat om een duurzame oplossing te vinden. Iedere dag gaan meer en meer jongeren de straat op om te eisen dat klimaatverandering wordt aangepakt door overheden. Maar het is ónmogelijk om te praten over de grote problemen van deze tijd – klimaatverandering\, migratie\, voedsel en veiligheid – zonder het te hebben over de manier waarop we omgaan met de bodem. \nTijdens deze avond gaat Willem Ferwerda (CEO Commonland) in op hoe de mens zich verhoudt tot de grond onder zijn voeten – en hoe de relatie tussen mens en natuur hersteld moet worden. Socrates Schouten (Waag) presenteert voorbeelden van burgerinitiatieven die zelf het heft in handen nemen binnen de Chamber of Commons. Ambassade van de Noordzee onderzoekt daarnaast de vraag; Wat als we landschappen\, rivieren óf de Noordzee in dit geval rechten zouden toekennen\, net als mensen? Een avond over onze omgang met de bodem. \nMet o.a. \nWillem Ferwerda is CEO van Commonland\, een organisatie die de natuur\, de bodem en de landbouw wil herstellen in grote\, onleefbaar geworden gebieden. Hij is als adviseur of bestuurder betrokken bij verschillende internationale organisaties op het gebied van natuur en duurzaamheid. \nJackie Lebo is schrijver\, producent en fotograaf en is hoofd van het Content House Kenia. Ze initieerde het project ‘Return tot he Cradle of Mankind’\, waarin kunstenaars uit Turkana en Nairobi verhalen uit het gebied vertalen voor een breed publiek. Turkana wordt gekweld door grote problemen door de recente vondst van ondergronds water\, olie\, en grote droogte – waardoor de stammen die het gebied bevolken er nauwelijks meer kunnen (over)leven. Lebo laat zien waarom lokale problemen globale impact hebben\, en de situatie aldaar óók ons aangaat. \nThijs Middeldorp is initiator van Het Parlement der Dingen en de presenteert tijdens deze avond een concrete casus; de  Ambassade van de Noordzee. Uitgangspunt van deze bijzondere ambassade: de zee is van zichzelf. Vertegenwoordigers presenteerden de Noordzee als onafhankelijke entiteit\, als eigen politiek lichaam met zelfbeschikkingsrecht vanaf 2030. \nSocrates Schouten is onderzoeker en projectleider bij Waag\, instituut voor technologie en samenleving te Amsterdam\, en ontwikkelde o.a. ‘The Chamber of Commons’. In dit programma geeft Waag aandacht aan de verdieping van de commons door het in kaart brengen van verschillende initiatieven. Tijdens deze avond laat Schouten zien hoe burgerinitiatieven hét redmiddel kunnen zijn in het hervormen van de relatie tussen mens en bodem.

DESCRIPTION:“Being heavily influenced by his work\, Veem House for Performance invited thinker and philosopher Bruno Latour to elaborate on his new book Facing Gaia\,” they write on their website. And about the book: \n“The emergence of modern sciences in the seventeenth century profoundly renewed our understanding of nature. For the last three centuries new ideas of nature have been continually developed by theology\, politics\, economics\, and science\, especially the sciences of the material world. The situation is even more unstable today\, now that we have entered an ecological mutation of unprecedented scale. Some call it the Anthropocene\, but it is best described as a new climatic regime. And a new regime it certainly is\, since the many unexpected connections between human activity and the natural world oblige every one of us to reopen the earlier notions of nature and redistribute what had been packed inside. So the question now arises: what will replace the old ways of looking at nature? \nThis book explores a potential candidate proposed by James Lovelock when he chose the name Gaia for the fragile\, complex system through which living phenomena modify the Earth. The fact that he was immediately misunderstood proves simply that his readers have tried to fit this new notion into an older frame\, transforming Gaia into a single organism\, a kind of giant thermostat\, some sort of New Age goddess\, or even divine Providence. In this series of lectures on natural religion\, Bruno Latour argues that the complex and ambiguous figure of Gaia offers\, on the contrary\, an ideal way to disentangle the ethical\, political\, theological\, and scientific aspects of the now obsolete notion of nature. He lays the groundwork for a future collaboration among scientists\, theologians\, activists\, and artists as they\, and we\, begin to adjust to the new climatic regime.”

DESCRIPTION:This event is in Dutch and organised by Veem House for Performance: \nDe relatie tussen de mens en zijn omgeving; de aarde\, dieren\, materialen en dingen was nog nooit zo belangrijk en urgent als nu. \n“Waar het op neerkomt is dat de mensheid als geheel ook eenzaam is.” \n– Lieke Marsman \n‘… Ik moest er voor zorgen dat ik het tegenovergestelde van een mens was’\, concludeert Ida nadat haar moeder haar zegt dat de mens ‘door en door slecht is’. Ida is de hoofdpersoon in Lieke Marsman’s debuut Het Tegenovergestelde van een Mens\, zowel een urgente essayistische en poëtische gedachteoefening over existentiële vragen met betrekking tot de roofbouw die we op de aarde hebben gepleegd\, als ook een roman over klimaat(verandering) en liefde. \n‘In het scheppingsverhaal van de Maori\, is de mens familie van de zee\, de wind en het bos. In het verhaal dat mij altijd is verteld\, overheerst de mens die natuur juist.’ Zo begint Thijs Middendorp een artikel in de serie ‘Het einde van de mens als maat der dingen’ in de Correspondent\, over zijn bezoek aan de Whanguanui-rivier in Nieuw-Zeeland\, die sinds een paar jaar een rechtspersoon is. Zijn fascinatie daarvoor sluit nauw aan bij het mede door hem opgerichte Parlement van de Dingen: een publieke ruimte waarin het recht niet alleen op mensen maar op het leven an sich betrokken wordt. \nZowel Lieke als Thijs oefenen zich in een (nieuw?) engagement met de wereld. Deze twee bijzondere stemmen in het posthumanistisch discours in Nederland\, vertellen deze middag over een andere\, misschien wel omgekeerde\, manier van ‘mens zijn’. De setting is een juist zeer artificiële ruimte van aluminium – de scenografie van de performance CEEPORT van Yuru Umamota dat de tragedie van onze blik verkent – en brengt de aanwezigheid van en bewustzijn over materialen voort als een andere entiteit om in acht te nemen en mee te leven. \nWords for the Future \nGepresenteerd wordt ook de allereerste issue van de publicatiereeks Words for the Future\, ontwikkeld door Nienke Scholts. Meer dan futuristische toekomstvisies zijn de woorden in deze serie – en de werelden waarnaar ze verwijzen – pogingen om een verhouding tot de complexiteit van het heden te vinden. Het eerste woord in de reeks resoneert sterk met de vragen over nieuwe relaties tussen levende (en materiële) ‘wezens’\, en zal onthuld worden aan het einde van deze middag. \nAn Incomplete Life \nDe avond wordt afgesloten met de performance ‘An Incomplete Life’ van Wild Vlees – dat onderzoekt wat de rol van de mens op aarde is en de vraag stelt of leven niet langzaam verdwijnen leren is. \nProgramma \n16:00-18:00 “Het tegenovergestelde van een mens” \n19:00-20:00 An Incomplete Life

On behalf of the Parliament of Things\, Thijs Middeldorp tells about the Embassy of the North Sea\, which will be established in The Hague in 2018. \n→ Wij Water —De opwekking van de Watermeent\nMet o.a. Sef\, Hiske Versprille\, Leopold Messan\, Thijs Middeldorp en Edwin Gardner. \nHet wordt een even absurd als interessant programma\, de opwekking van De Watermeent op zondagmorgen in de De Bolder. Onder de bezielende leiding van Yousef Gnaoui\, alias Sef\, geven tal van voordrachtkunstenaars in woord en gebaar gestalte aan de verklaring van ‘ons water’ tot een gemeenschappelijk goed. Het water dat ook op Vlieland voor een paar grijpstuivers uit de kraan komt. Water uit een zoetwaterbel die als een bijna oneindige bron fungeert. (Zeewater verdampt\, vormt regenwolken\, de regen slaat neer op de duinen\, de zandlagen filteren het in 30 jaar\, waarna Vitens het oppompt en in de waterleidingen leidt.) Dat water is dus van ons allemaal. Dat is een recht. Maar dat recht brengt ook een plicht met zich mee. \nDaarover gaat het dus in ‘Wij Water’\, een verhaal dat ook tot uiting komt in BRAK – de waterbar ‘Bij De IJsbaan’ en op de ‘watercocktailontvangst’ bij de boot. \nZondag 3 september 11:30 uur in De Bolder\n‘Wij Water’ wordt mogelijk gemaakt door Dopper\, Weltevree\, Studio Rooiejas\, Lab Vlieland\, Monnik en Vitens.
